Statement Célio Braga 2021:
My practice is supported by a very well defined method that involves long processes and specific techniques such as collages, perforations, layering, mending, stitching, embroidery and weaving.
Through those typical mediums that somehow are related to feminin tasks and labour I reflect on gender conventions and stereotypes on the roles of man, women and everything in between. It is also my intention to create a constant friction between the feminine versus the masculine, heterosexuality versus homosexuality, high art versus low art aesthetic, sacred versus the profane, art versus craft, beauty versus ugliness...
In my recent works elements such as scars, wounds, marks, vulvas, phallus, eyes, tears, blood tears, mouths, and thorns proliferate in rich compositions within the topics of sexuality, homoeroticism, religion, gender, violence, birth and death.
My work is also a personal testament to the inevitable passage of time.

Célio Braga is the artist from Brasil + NL, making photos, drawings, installations, videos. His path has been marked by the ability to redefine and to expand fluidly conventional categories such as photography, sculpture and textiles among others. These media are pushed to the limit and beyond, through successive trials and by the employment of unusual materials and craft techniques. Conceptually he deals with the following topics: the fragility of the body, healing rituals, the irrevocable passage of time, processes of disappearance and silence, memory, the definitive nature of death, grief and sexuality.
Letʼs reflect on his minutely carved - as I never saw it - papers:
he cuts and perforates in white paper and photos - his paper works are often layered reliefs and therefore they have a tangability, like objects. However the work concerns fragility - to the point of disappearing...
The white works look abstract and minimal, but glow of organic growings that refer to nature, for instance to the beauty of flower petals or to a jungle of foliage, but also to different structures of the skin with small blobs, pores and shedding; or to the inside of our bodies with organs and intestines. The subtility is clear from the different patterns in the white paper, but also from the combination of the white paper and photography: the furrows in the paper and on the photo look alike, trails of paper and photoprint graceful intertwine, and a piece of a pink photo has a counterpart in a little dot, drawn with colour pencil. Basically all Célioʼs works are skins.
Some works are related to 'medicines'. 'Burning With Emotion (Triumeq)', 2016 consists of perforated paper, textile threads, color pencil, all in/on medical instructions for use (2016, 42 x 61 cm.). Triumeq is a medicine that is used against HIV and aids. The texts of the instructions are readable, also the perforated texts of Flauberts' Temptation of St. Anthony. A ten-part work, 2017, consists of medicine bottles, overlaid with white embroidered textile.
The presentation on the Art Rotterdam 2018 will include carved and perforated paper works, works in textile and with 12 medicine bottels, an animation/ video.
Célio Braga's werk gaat over de kwetsbaarheid van het menselijk leven,
en over 'schoonheid en liefde'.
